Thinking back to high school there was a speaker who came into school and was talking about drunk driving. His method in trying to persuade us and make it so that we don't drink in drive was to appeal to our emotions. He did this through a variety of ways. First, he gave his personal story about when he was younger and decided to drive drunk. He ended up hitting someone and if I remember right he killed someone. So part of his conviction was to go around to schools and tell other students the dangers of drinking and driving. So with this story he was hoping that with this sad story it would make us think about this before we decided to drink and drive. He explained how it changed his life forever and everyday he remembers about the day that he decided to drink and drive and he didn't want us to have to go through that. When this happened he lived in a small town like the town that I grew up in and he said that everyone knew everyone which is the same as my hometown. He said not only him but his family was affected because everyone knew that he had killed one of their family members, friend, or other acquaintance. So he couldn't go anywhere in town with out getting stares from people and he knew they were staring at him because they killed someone. He told this story to appeal to our emotions in hopes that we would think before we decided to drink and drive.
Have you ever had a school assembly where someone was appealing to your emotions in hopes of making you change an action?

I have heard many speeches from different people trying to persuade me in different ways. Like you, there was an assembly in high school where a lady came in to talk to us about drunk driving. She really appealed to our emotions as she described her painful story. Her daughter was killed by a drunk driver and she was devastated by it. There were many people in the audience that were crying while listening to her speech. When you have a speaker that comes in and really makes you FEEL what they are talking about, it is very effective. It made me want to make sure that I did everything I could to keep drunk people from going behind the wheel of a vehicle. She didn't make me change an action but she made me want to take action.
ReplyDeleteI have been in a High School assembly were the same thing happened. It was a speech about drunk driving also. I was in a group called SADD (Student against Destructive Decisions) and during my senior year we had decided that we should have speakers come in and talk about drunk driving. We had people talk about their experiences and had videos of others. It make the school think about what could actually happen. While stories were being told to the audience you started to see the faces of each student and it was making a difference. No action was changed in me because I dont drink and drive but I hope it changed others views.
